The Foundation of Scouting

 

The Boy Scouts of America provides the Nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be “Prepared. For Life.®” The Scouting organization is composed of more than 1.2 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and over a half-million adult volunteers in 253 local councils throughout the United States, its territories and overseas military bases.  Click here to review the BSA's 2020 Report to the Nation which was delivered by Scouting youth on video to US Congressional leaders.

The Purpose of the BSA:  is to promote through cooperation with other agencies and with a founding charter from the US Congress, the ability of youth to do things for themselves and others, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues.  In achieving this purpose, emphasis is placed upon its educational program and the oaths and codes for character development, citizenship training, leadership skills, and mental and physical fitness.

The Aims of Scouting:  every Scouting activity and program is designed to move young people toward the basic aims of character development, citizenship training, leadership skills, and mental and physical fitness.

The BSA Mission Statement:  the mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

The Scout Oath:  On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

The Scout Law:  A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.

The Scout Motto:  Be Prepared!

The Scout Slogan:  Do a good turn daily.

Scouting Programs in Marin
